The Sandersville Progress, 30 Jan 1918:
DR. J.H. EVANS PASSES AWAY AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS WEDNESDAY MORNING
All of our people in this section were shocked and saddened Wednesday morning when the news was heralded that Dr. J.H. Evans had passed away at his home on east Church street in this city, the cause of his death being from acute indigestion. The attack came suddenly and severely, and everything possible was done for his relief, but without avail, the end coming just before the dawn of the day Wednesday morning about four o'clock. On the previous day Dr. Evans was at his office at the drug store of Dr. M.D. Jamerson and had attended a number of calls of patients, apparently in his usual health, and it was hard to realize that his life had ended so abruptly. He enjoyed a large practice and was highly esteemed by everybody, both as a physician and a citizen. When he first began the practice of medicine he located at Davisboro and had an extensive practice in that territory, but about ten years ago he was induced to move to Sandersville in order to reach a larger field. He had enjoyed splendid educational advantages and was one of our best informed citizens, not only in his special line of work but on events generally, and it was always a pleasure to discuss with him the current affairs upon which he kept well informed. He was quiet and unostentatious and enjoyed the friendship and respect of all who knew him, and was greatly beloved by the entire community. He is survived by his wife who was Miss Hopkins of Savannah, one son, Julian, two daughters, Misses Fina and Dorothy, four brothers, Judge B. D. Evans of the United States Circuit Court who resides in Savannah, and Messrs. Geo. C., A. Willis, and A. Louis Evans of Sandersville, and one sister, Mrs. T.H. Booz of Rome, Ga.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist church Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dr. T.J. Beck and his pastor, Rev. W.A. Wray, who paid a splendid tribute to the exalted character of our beloved fellow citizen who had so suddenly been taken away from the activities of life, after which the Masonic brethren took charge of the remains and escorted the body to the cemetery where the beautiful Masonic burial service was conducted. An unusually large concourse of relatives and friends attended the burial as a mark of respect to the memory of their friend, and the many floral offerings were expressive of the sorrow and sympathy of those who knew him best.
In the death of Dr. Evans, Sandersville has lost one of her foremost citizens and the entire community extends to the bereaved family that heartfelt sympathy which all feel in the loss of this noble physician and Christian gentleman. He was a member of the city council and was also county physician, which leaves two vacancies to be filled.
