Death of Mr. Mather

Mr. Joseph H. Mather, who died at his home in this town last Wednesday, was born in Smithfield, Madison county, July 17, 1811. He was the son of John and Sally Mather, who went to Madison county from Connecticut in 1805. Mr. Mather married Hannah M. Jerome October 30, 1834, and moved from the town of Richmond to Geneseo, where they lived until 1854, when they came to Livonia. Mr. Mather was one of six children, of whom but one is now living, Mrs. Buell of Lima, whose age is 90. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mather. Henry J. Mather and Mrs. Noah Adams are the only survivors. Mrs. Mather died on the 14th of March last year, at the age 91. Mr. Mather had always been in good health, having had little or no occasion for a doctor for nearly fifty years. He voted for Jackson in 1832, but had been a staunch Republican since the organization of the party. He took great interest in political affairs, and voted for every President since, Andrew Jackson's time, and never missed but two town meetings. It is only a couple of months ago that this fine old gentleman of 95 attended Mr. Blake's party, and he was one of the best preserved men present. He was an active man in the affairs of the community, a good citizen, a man of strong friendships, and he will be greatly missed by his many warm friends in Livonia. The funeral will be held from the house today at 11 o'clock.
