Obituary
Ethan C. Finch, son of Calvin and Clarissa Finch, was born near Binghampton, New York, August 18, 1842. He was the only son in a family of five children. The only member of his father's family who survives is a sister of the deceased, Mrs. Julia Walker, of Northwood, Iowa.
He was educated in the DeRuyter Academy, of De Ruyter, New York. When seventeen years of age he taught school in New York state. He came to Northwood with his father's family in 1865. He then taught several terms of school in Worth and Winnebago counties. He afterward engaged in farming and various lines of business in and near Northwood.
On April 19, 1869, he united in marriage with Ida D. Remore, of Northwood. Four children were born to them: Harriett, who died when about a year old, Mrs. Francis E. Brown of New York City, R. L. Finch of Mason City, Iowa, and H. C. Finch of Northwood.
He has been in rather feeble health the past two years. On July 3, 1921, he fell and fractured his hip. Since that time he had been in the Naeve Hospital at Albert Lea, Minn. He made considerable improvement and was able to sit up recently for five or six hours a day, until last Friday, when complications set in resulting in his death, which occurred Tuesday, March 7.
Mr. Finch was a pioneer of this county. The county was a virgin prairie when he settled here. One store, a blacksmith shop, a saw mill and grist mill combined were the only places of business in Northwood. So passes, in his eightieth year, one of our oldest residents.
