Described as "one of the oldest life-long residents of Madison" upon her death. Unfortunately, 26 years before she died, Lydia suffer a stroke. She was paralyzed and an invalid till her death at her daughter's home in Madison. (Mrs. Fred Walding) "She bore with a quiet spirit and resignation many years of invalidism. She was possessed of a gentle, amiable disposition and held in high esteem by a host of friends."

Lydia lived her whole life in Madison, Ohio. She was the tenth child of 13. Her father, Asa, was a cabinet maker and farmer. At the age of 20, in 1858, she married her husband “Horace Allen” who farmed the land adjacent to her father's farm. Father Asa lived with Lydia’s family in the later years of life. Her father died in 1870 before her stroke around 1890 when she was in her 50’s.
