Claude served as a Technical Sergeant & Radio Operator / Gunner on B-17G "Heavenly Body" #43-37776, 849th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Audrain County, Missouri prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 3, 1943 at Jefferson Barrack's, Missouri. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Manager and also as Single, with dependents.

B-17G #43-37776 took off, with a crew of 8 and 3 gunner instructors, on a night cross-country training exercise. While turning just North of Nailstone, near Ibstock, the aircraft's nose dropped and the port wing struck the ground. The machine was completely destroyed by fire and explosion. All on board were killed.

Claude was "Killed In Action" in the "Line Of Duty" in this crash during the war.
