LaFAYETTE -- Mr. Alfred (Sonny) Abney, 70, of LaFayette died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 at his residence.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Wayne Barrett and Steve Powell officiating.

Mr. Abney is survived by his wife, Betty Welch Abney of LaFayette; three children, Danita (Jeffrey) Dodgen of LaFayette, Jeff (Laurie) Abney of Biloxi, Miss., and David (Regina) Abney of LaFayette; two sisters, Pauline (Joe) Boyd of Cartersville, Ga., and Sue Norgard of Montgomery, Ala.; one brother-in-law, Ted Lynn of Edgefield, S.C.; and 12 grandchildren, Cord Dodgen, Trent Dodgen, Seth Ryan Abney, Shannon Abney, Brittany Abney, Caleb Abney, Dara Lee Abney, Maci Abney, Sandi Abney, Charles Belcher, Daniella Belcher and Mark Bramlett.

Born in Chambers County on Nov. 9, 1933, Mr. Abney was retired from WestPoint Stevens after 45 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Abney was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Visitation was held Friday evening at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in LaFayette.
