SHANKS

Opal Eloise (Anderson) Shanks, third daughter of John F. Anderson and Della (Arnold) Anderson, was born June 17, 1907 in Lucas County, Iowa and passed away November 20, 1992 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa, at the age of 85 years and five months.

She was raised and attended schools in Lucas County. On Feb. 16, 1927, she was united in marriage to Ralph Shanks and to this union 11 children were born. She and her husband farmed for many years in Lucas and Wayne Counties. She spent her spare time doing her many crafts of quilting, crocheting and making pine needle baskets.

In 1975, Opal and her husband retired and moved to Chariton, spending the summer months there and winter months in Mission, Texas. Until Ralph's death, they enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing and playing cards with family and friends. Opal was a caring person and her family meant very much to her and she will be greatly missed.

Preceding her in death were her husband; father and mother; one brother, Ivan; two sisters, Myrtle Anderson and Fern L. Davis; and infant son, Freddie James; daughter-in-law, Louise; son-in-law, Bill Briner; three grandsons, Tim, Tracey and Grant Shanks; and a great-granddaughter, Carissa Briner.

Surviving Opal are eight sons and two daughters, Walter and wife Nancy of Silver Creek, Neb.; Juanita and husband Norman Owens of Weldon; Robert and wife Jennie of Johnston; Ralph L. and wife Jean of Ankeny; Myrtle Briner of Chariton; John and wife Judy of Des Moines; Ed and wife Annie of Chariton; Donald and wife Daniell of French Settlement, La.; Gail and wife Linda of Clive; and Larry of Chariton; 39 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

In April, 1991, Opal became a resident of the Northridge Living Center in Chariton where she became a member of the Kitchen Band and enjoyed the fun, entertainment, and playing cards with her friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 23, at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Olson officiating. Burial followed in the Chariton Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Kenneth Sponsler, George Morrett, Joe Kasper, Ed Shovlain, Guy Stalter and Paul Sheldon.
