Mrs. Phebe H. Lincoln, whose death was briefly noted in the Calistogan of the 5th, inst., was born July 2d, 1799, in Dutchess Co., NY.
Her father, James Hayes, moved into Chenango Co., NY., when she was quite young. Here she underwent the many privations of the, then, new country, and at the age of about 28, in company with her husband, left that county for the far West.
Their home in Illinois was near Hillsborough, Montgomery Co., and later in the town of Litchfield.
In the early fall of 1859, after a residence of thirty years in the State, the husband with a portion of the family sailed for California from New York city, arriving in San Francisco in December. He took up his abode in Mono Co., where he died in 1864, at the age of about 75 years. Thus it will be seen that Mrs. Lincoln underwent many hardships incident to life in new countries; and all was borne with remarkable quietness.
Three years ago she was taken down with dropsy, rendering her helpless for some time. She stopped with her two sons until just before May-day, when she went to Dunnegan to visit another son, expecting to return to Calistoga. On Saturday June 1st, she seemed unusually well—talked freely on different subjects until 2 o'clock, then went to bed. At 12 she called to Mrs. A. F. Lincoln to come to her side. The call was answered, and she was found to be suffering with pain which did not abate till her death, at 12 m. June 2d. She died of dropsy of the heart. She was the mother of twelve children—eight sons and four daughters.
Five sons are yet living, one of the older sons, Dr. A.B. Lincoln having been murdered in California in an early day; two daughters are living, one in Oregon.
Grandmother, as she was always called, was a kind, christian mother, beloved by all who knew her. She was buried June the 3d, at Vacaville Cemetery, beside her husband.
