Maj. Stevenson entered the
Confederate Army at the begin-
ning of the civil war as 1st Lt
of a company raised by Capt J.J.
Hedrick. Actually enlisted in
NHC,N.C. April 16, 1861 & was
appt'ed 1st Lt to rank from June
17, 1861 in 1st Company C of the
2nd Reg N.C. Artillery(36 S.T.).
Soon after the seizure of Ft
Johnson, Lt Stevenson was
ordered to Ft Caswell as ord-
nance officer, and while there
3 young men from Sampson Cty
raised a company & offered him
the captaincy, which he accepted.
The Company was attached to the
36th State Troops(2nd Reg NC Art.
Unit was ordered to Ft Fisher
where Stevenson was major of the
regiment. He remained at Ft Fisher
until ordered to reinforce Gen
Hardee in Georgia. There he was
highly complimented for his cool
bravery and tact in covering
Hardee's retreat. He took with
him 5 companies from the 36th.
Major Stevenson was again re-
manded to his regiment at Ft
Fisher, where he arrived just
after the attack in Dec, 1864.
On the 13th of Jan, 1865, the
attack was renewed. In the battle
Major Stevenson was hurled from
the parapet by the explosion of
an eleven-inch shell. He fell
bleeding in the fort below the
battery and was carried a pri-
soner to Ft Columbus, Governor's
Island, N.Y.. where he died. "He
did his whole duty and did it
well. Wilmington had no nobler
son".
