Clara Tillman Stevenson was the daughter of Elizabeth James Sears (1803-1872) and James Chapman Stevenson (1800-1872).

She married in New Bern, North Carolina, October 3, 1855, Major Theodore Jones Hughes (1834-1896), son of Eliza A. McLin and Wayne Hughes.

They had nine children, among them:

1. Kathleen Cawthron Hughes, #67301045, b. 1864, d. 1936; m. 1884 William Lightfoot Ross, b. 1861, d. 1952

2. Cordelia Vass Hughes, #86281854, b. 1869, d. 1943; m. Edmund Meyers Talcott, #86281902 (1866-1960).
