While driving his auto on the way to a family reunion at Fond du Lac, Sunday, Charles Gillen, 53, of 1110 Osborn Avenue, was stricken with a heart attack which proved fatal this morning.
He, his wife and two guests were in the auto when Mr. Gillen felt the first effects of the attack. He drove to the side of the road on Highway 45, south of Hansen's corners. The county ambulance was summoned. He was taken to Mercy Hospital at 12:20p.m. He passed away at 4 o'clock this morning
Mr. Gillen was born here July 23, 1897, the son of the late Charles and Hannah O'Brien Gillen. On Sept. 25, 1924 he was married to Miss Mary Tosch of this city in Pittsville.
He served with the 42nd Rainbow division in World War I and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society of St. John's Catholic Church and a former deputy sheriff.
His wife survives him.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sitter Funeral Home and at 9 o'clock at St. John's Catholic Church, with the Rev. John J. Murphy officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the grave side by the 42nd Rainbow division of veterans. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home this evening and until time of the services Wednesday. The rosary will be said at 7:30 this evening and at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society will recite the rosary at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening and members of the 42nd Rainbow Veterans auxiliary will meet at the funeral home at 7:30, Tuesday evening.
