EDDY PIONEER DIES

Sam Dawson Jone, 85, pioneer Eddy County resident, died Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.D. Clark, 308 North Eighth Street, after a long illness.

Born Aug. 5, 1869, near Lincoln, on the Ruidoso River, James came to Eddy County as a young man with his parents, settling near Seven Rivers.

As a youth he started ranching on Rocky Arroyo and continued as a rancher for over 65 years. After the death of his wife in 1940 he moved to Carlsbad.

He was married to Mary Elizabeth Fanning on March 3, 1909 at Carlsbad. They had two sons and four daughters.

An older brother, Tom Jones, was the first white child born in Roswell, and he took part in the famous Lincoln County War.

At the time Jones and his brother---originally there were nine---started ranching near Rocky Arroyo, there was no town of Carlsbad, or Eddy. They grazed their cattle over what is now Carlsbad.

Jones recalled Billy the Kid in an article written for the Current-Argus over a year ago. It was a brother, Jim, who set fire to the McSween house during the Lincoln County War to fore the Kid out in the open, Jones said in the story.

One brother, John, was killed by Bob Ollinger, and his death was avenged by Billy the Kid, who was friendly with the Jones family.

During his early ranching days, Jones said he had a pair of "pretty salty characters" who lived with him one whole winter. After they left he found out the pair were the outlaws Tom Ketchum and his brother.

Funeral services will be held at the West Funeral Home Chapel at 10:30 Saturday morning. The Rev. H.M. Reeves of the Assembly of God will officiate and burial will be at Carlsbad Cemetery.

Jones is survived by two sons, Sammy and Charles, Carlsbad; four daughters, Opal Clark, Anabell Thayer, Juanita Jackson, all of Carlsbad, and Essie Hudson, Santa Fe, and a brother, Frank, also of Carlsbad. In addition there are 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Douglas Jones, Hike Shafer, Marcus Smith, Bill Jones, Brantley Jones, and Ernest Shafer, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers are: Wash Simpson, Jim Dublin, Roy McClain, Tim Murray, Cicero Stewart, Dee Harkey, Bob Shields, W.C. Bates, John Queen, Ole Gossett, Arthur Mayes, Tom Woods, Hod James, Ralph Thayer, Raymond Shafer.
