A funeral for Annabelle Jones Thayer, 93, was held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Melvin Suttle and the Rev. Fred Connell officiating.

Mrs. Thayer died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004 at Lakeview Christian Home of the Southwest, Northgate Unit in Carlsbad.Denton-Funchess Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Annabell Jones Thayer was the granddaughter of Heiskell and Barbara "Ma'am" Jones and Martin Wesley and Sarah Corn Fanning, two New Mexico Territory pioneer families.

She was born Feb. 19, 1911, to Sam and Elizabeth "Lib" Fanning Jones. She grew up on the family ranch some 20 miles west of Carlsbad, where the two-story resplendent Jones home sat along the creek of the base of the towering bluff on Rocky Arroyo. She attended school first at Rocky Arroyo and then in Carlsbad.

Annabelle Jones and Walter Edward Thayer Jr. were married on Nov. 5, 1927. For a period of time, she and Walter lived and ranched on the Love Place about 10 miles west of Carlsbad, where their first child, Mary Lou, was born. Later, they moved to 1504 W. Fox St., where Walter E. III (Sonny) and Annalee were born.Just before the end of World War II, Walter, Sonny and cousin Sammy Clark built a new home at 413 N. Second St., where Annabelle lived, fed and cared for any and all of the multitude of friends and family who graced her home with their presence. She and Walter felt honored to parent and mother them all.Annabell enjoyed swimming, music and dancing at Rocky Arroyo and she reluctantly rode horses, helped work cattle and hunted deer with Walter. Later in life, she spent her resources, attention and energies on caring for her grandchildren and serving God.

She was a member of First Assembly of God Church and was active in Women's Ministries. She was also quite noted for her moist, delicious potato cakes.A deep debt of gratitude is owed to the staff of Lakeview Christian Home of the Southwest, Northgate Unit. Their years of tender love and professional care made Annabelle's stay one of comfort and dignity...like family. Please know that there aren't enough words to express the thanks that you deserve.

On Nov. 9, 1977, Annabelle was preceded in death by her husband Walter, who, for 46 years was a member of the Official Board of First Assembly of God Church. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Stella Coates, Essie Hudson and Opal Clark; and brothers, Sammie Jones and Charlie Jones. She is survived by one sister, Juanita Clark of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughter, Mary Lou and husband , James Otts, of Carlsbad; son, Walter E.
