The Anthon Herald, 2 December 1970, page 1: Bernard Allen "Barney" Bowers of Smithland passed away at a Sioux City hospital on Saturday, November 21, 1970, at the age of 67 years and 2 days. Mr. Bowers was born the son of Allen and Rebecca (Edinger) Bowers, on November 19, 1903, at Kingsley, Iowa. He married Gladys Thompson December 24, 1925. Following his marriage he farmed in the Kingsley and LeMars areas until 1948 when he moved to The Dalles, Oregon, where he was employed as a machinist in a maraschino cherry factory. He continued to live there until October 13 of this year when he moved to Smithland and made his home with his brother, Donald. He ws a member of the Church of the Nazarene in The Dalles. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Rev. Merritt (Blanche) Ralls of Alliance, Nebraska, and three brothers, Donald of Smithland, Ernest of Anthon and Lyle of Denver, Colorado. He was preceded by his parents, his wife who passed away in 1958 and two brothers. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 25, 1970, at 1:30 p.m. from the Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley with Rev. Eugene Smith, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Climbing Hill, officiating. Interment was in the Kingsley Cemetery.
