Mrs. Caroline Virginia Caughman Dent, 71, widow of Lawrence C. Dent, of Rt. 4, Columbia, died unexpectedly yesterday morning at her residence. She was born in Lower Richland County, a daughter of the late Wright Denley Caughman and Mattie Sue Jones Caughman. A graduate of the Lykesland High School and Columbia College, Mrs. Dent taught for a number of years in the Richland County Schools. Mrs. Dent was a member of Bethel Methodist Church, the Friendship Club, Senior Citizen Club and Rebecca Lodge 6. Her husband died March, 1954 [1955]. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Eva C. Cobb and Mrs. Stella C. Burns; three brothers, Fred H. Caughman Sr., Winnsboro, W. Belton (Nick) Caughman and C. Douglas Caughman, both of Columbia; also a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. in the Dunbar Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. John G. Hipp. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be the following nephews: Henry Caughman, Douglas Campbell Jr., Denley Charles Caughman, Dr. DuBose Dent, Donny Dent, and Neal Dent. © The State, Columbia, SC, 18 Feb 1962
