John Luman PETTIS was married 1st to Harriett DAVIS on 27 December 1859 (the year after Minnesota Statehood) in Kasota Township, Le Sueur County, Minnesota by Edmund OLEN, Minister. They lived in Kasota Township, Le Sueur County, Minnesota.

Harriett DAVIS PETTIS died 9 days after the birth of her 5th child on 31 December 1873, presumably of complications of childbirth. The official cause of death reads: Inflamation of the bowels. Harriett DAVIS PETTIS was laid to rest in the PETTIS - DAVIS Cemetery over-looking Lake Emily. Her body was later moved to Woodlawn Cemetery where she rests beside her husband.

DEATH OF JOHN L. PETTIS.

John L. PETTIS was born in Pike county, Ill. on Jan. 30th, 1836. He came with his parents to Minnesota in 1854. The family located at Lake Emily. He made his home with them until he married to Miss Harriet DAVIS in 1860. To them were born five children, two of whom survive him, Mrs. Henry STARK, of Idaho, and W. J. PETTIS, of Fort Lupton, Col. His first wife died in 1873. He was a son of the late Chas. and Sarah HOSFORD PETTIS. He settled on his own farm two and one-half miles S. E. of Kasota in 1866, where he continued to reside with the exception of two years which he spent visiting his children in the West. On May 10th, 1882 he was married to Miss Sarah HILL, of Eagle Lake. To them were born three children. D. E. PETTIS, of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. G. H. BARRINGTON, of Florence, Ariz., and Ira on the home farm. He suffered much with asthma many years of his life. His last sickness dates from Nov. 1919. After four months he was able to sit up and come to meals, but was never able to walk again. He suffered no pain until about Christmas last year when severe pain in his back troubled him at times. He was remarkable patient and uncomplaining. He was always a strong temperance man. In his young days was a member of the Sons of Temperance Lodge. Was an officer and active worker with them for years. He had a kind disposition: loved the little children. Those of the home were a great comfort to him. They miss the dear grandpa whose death occurred July 17th, 1921. Funeral services were held in the grove before his own door, July 19th, at 2:30 P. M. A goodly number of neighbors and friends were present to pay their respects to him who had lived among them for over fifty years. Elder Anderson, of Mankato, preached the sermon, taking for his text 1 Thess. 4:13. He impressively presented to his hearers the certainty of a resurrection and of the second coming of Christ. Pallbearers were his nephews Chester DAVIS, Melville DAVIS, Winslow DAVIS, Roscoe DAVIS, George DAVIS and Ebb DAVIS. Interment was at Woodlawn." Clipping from the Dora PETTIS collection.

"Asleep in Jesus" is often inscribed on the Monuments of Seventh Day Adventists who have passed away. They "Slumber" waiting the Arrival of Jesus Who will Judge the Quick and the Dead.
