"CIVIL WAR VETERAN IS CALLED
Charles C. PETTIS Served in Rebellion With Seventh Minnesota.
Old residents of this section will learn with regret of the death of Charles Clarence PETTIS which occurred at his home at Medelia last Tuesday, July 10th. Mr. PETTIS was a territorial pioneer of Minnesota, and served in the Civil war as a member of the Seventh regiment.
Mr. PETTIS was born in Newburg, Pike County, Illinois, on Feb. 26, 1846, and thus was past 71 years of age. When a boy of eight, in 1854, he came to Minnesota with his parents. They settled in Le Sueur county, and he worked on the homestead until August 1862, when he enlisted in Company K, Seventh Minnesota Volunteers.
The following year he crossed the plains with the force commanded by General H. H. Sibley, whose pursuit of the Sioux Indians was so brisk that they were beaten out of the state and then went South, remaining there until 1865, He was in all the engagements in which his regiment participated, including the great battle of Nashville, and when he received his honorable discharge he lacked but two days of serving three years in the army of his country.
Mr. PETTIS is survived by his wife and seven children. The latter are: Reuben, Edna and May PETTIS, at home; Henry and Ella PETTIS, living in North Dakota, and his daughters Lizzie and Alice who reside in Montana. He also leaves two brothers, Henry F. PETTIS and John L. PETTIS, and two sisters, Mrs. Henry C. DAVIS and Mrs. Emily BROWN, all of Kasota township.
The funeral will be held from the Presbyterian church in Kasota at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Burial will be made at Woodlawn cemetery."
