Emily was the 7th child and youngest girl in the family of Charles PETTIS and Sarah Ann HOSFORD PETTIS early pioneers of Le Sueur County, Minnesota Territory. Emily's father died in 1856 when she was 11 years old.
Emily married Philander BROWN on 2 April 1863 at her mother's home on the banks of Lake Emily. The lake was named for her by her father in the early days when Minnesota was just being organized.
Emily and Philander were parents of 10 children:

Emily PETTIS BROWN was living with one of her children in Williston, North Dakota when she passed away. Her body was brought back to Le Sueur County for burial beside her husband in Kasota Hill Cemetery.
