Robert W. Whiteman, 90, formerly of Indian Valley, Idaho passed away peacefully at the Idaho State Veterans Home on February 3, 2011.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, February 8th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Summers Funeral Homes, Ustick Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 9th at 2:00 p.m. also at Summers Funeral Homes, Ustick Chapel. Bob was born May 23, 1920 in Cambridge, Idaho. He was delivered by his father, the first child of Dr. Robert Theodore and Carrie Campbell Whiteman. He attended Cambridge Schools, graduating in 1937, attended the College of Idaho for two years and the University of Idaho where he graduated in 1941 with a degree in Business. Bob was always proud to have been a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. Following school, he worked on the family Circle C Ranch in New Meadows.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941. Bob left for Aviation Cadet training but the pilot training didn't work out due to an inner ear infection. After several months in Texas, he requested and received an overseas assignment and was sent to the European Theatre serving in the 9th Air Defence Command in England, France and Belgium. After 42 months of service, he received an honorable discharge and returned home.

After a short time on the ranch he worked for the MacGregor Logging Company in Council, Idaho. At that time, he met and married Ilene Cornett of Indian Valley. They purchased a ranch and farmed in Indian Valley for the next 50 years.

He was a charter member of the Indian Valley Fire Department, Grass Man of the Year for Adams County, served fifteen years on the Adams County Selective Service Board, served two terms as Adams County Commissioner and 31 years as Magistrate for Adams County which was his favorite career. Bob was also a member of the Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.

He was an avid reader with a wide range of interests and enjoyed life, travel, people and jokes. "From the time you're born till you ride in the hearse, nothings ever so bad, it couldn't be worse" was a favorite motto. At various times, he was a cowboy, logger, soldier, commissioner and finally, the Adams County Magistrate.

Bob also enjoyed the last years of his life at the Idaho State Veterans Home where he made many new friends. Special thanks to all the wonderful staff and fellow veterans who went the extra mile to love, nurture and provide support during his stay there. You can never be thanked enough.

Robert is survived by his loyal wife of 62 years, Ilene Cornett Whiteman; two sons, Lawrence Bradley Whiteman (Leah), of Boise, and Robert "Ted" Whiteman (Leslee), of Boise; a daughter, Karen Whiteman Ritchie (Ken), of Boise; his grandchildren, Jacalyn Marosi (Philip), Jessica Socha (Tim), R.T. Whiteman (Denise), Zach Ritchie and Alex Ritchie; two great-grandchildren, Alexa Socha and Zoey Whiteman; sister, Anne Beckstead, of California and brother Don's wife, Pat, of Moscow; numerous extended family; and close friend, Willma Carr.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Don.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Indian Valley Fire Department, the Cambridge Ambulance Fund or the Idaho State Veterans Home.
