Ilene Whiteman, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, of Meridian, Idaho, passed away in a local hospital on Saturday, March 22, 2014, surrounded by loved ones.

Ilene, the only child of Ross and Elsie Craig Cornett, was born on April 10, 1926 in Indian Valley, Idaho. She was delivered by Dr. R.T. Whiteman, Cambridge, Idaho who later became her father-in-law. Her ancestors were some of the original homesteaders in Indian Valley dating back to 1882.

Ilene attended a one-room elementary schoolhouse (Grays Creek School) for all eight years where there were a total of 13-14 students. The main entertainment while growing up was watching the antics of her dogs, horses and whatever else nature had to offer. While it sounds cliché, she really did have to walk or ride a horse a mile or more to school through the deep snow at times.

Ilene graduated from Cambridge High School in 1944 and the Boise Business University in 1945. She then attended the University of Idaho until she married Robert (Bob) Whiteman on December 30, 1947.

They resided at Crooked River logging camp and Council, Idaho until 1949 when they bought a ranch in Indian Valley where they raised their three children. During this time, there were brief intervals when the family had to be away from the ranch due to their son's allergy problems.

Ilene possessed a strong work ethic and strived to be the best she could be in each and every job she held. She was employed at the University of Idaho, the State Merit System, and the U.S. Forest Service where she served for 20 years until her retirement in 1988 from the position of Support Services Supervisor.

For many years, she spent winters in Meridian and summers in Indian Valley finally winding up in Meridian full-time the last 20 years of her life.

Ilene kept in touch with her "old" friends but made many new ones in the Meridian/Boise area. She was known for raising a big garden, beautiful flowers, delicious berries and then sharing her produce with friends and family alike.

Ilene always tried to serve her community whenever and wherever needed by taking her famous mincemeat pies to a turkey shoot fundraiser, covered dishes to various activities or by volunteering her time to assist others. Many "visitors and workmen" just happened to "drop by" around lunchtime because they always knew Mom would share a delicious meal with anyone in need.

Ilene's greatest priority in life was her family. She dearly loved and was very dedicated to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they knew she was always there to help them and it was important to her to pass along strong core values at every opportunity. She served as an excellent role model for being honest, hard-working and fair She made a habit of putting her family before her own needs.

Ilene also showered her never-ending love on an array of dogs throughout her lifetime and these relationships brought her many laughs and provided great entertainment.

Ilene was a member of the Hiawatha Rebecca Lodge, Indian Valley, Idaho for more than 60 years and she was baptized into the Christian faith in December, 2004. She loved outings with her Black Cat Club ladies and the Council Lunch Group. She also liked an occasional trip to Jack Pot to try her luck at gambling when she could find a travel mate.

Ilene was preceded in death by her parents, Ross Cornett (1962) and Elsie Craig Cornett (1981); and her husband, Bob Whiteman, (Feb. 2011).

She is survived by her sons: Brad (Leah) Whiteman, and Ted (Leslee) Whiteman II; daughter Karen (Ken) Ritchie; her grandchildren: Jacalyn (Phillip) Marosi, Jessica (Tim) Socha, R.T. (Denise) Whiteman III, Zach Ritchie and Alex Ritchie; and four great-grandchildren: Zoey and R. T. Whiteman IV, and Alexa and A.J. Socha.

We will always love and miss you Mom. Thanks for always sacrificing for us.

Donations can be made to the Indian Valley Rebecca Lodge or the Indian Valley Fire Department.
