He may have been related to "Charter John" Stewart of Londonderry,NH, but this is not at all certain. James came to Colrain,MA in 1742, when he and his son-in-law Thomas McGee bought a settling lot in the first division, James taking the northern half, and McGee the southern half.

Children: Ann Stewart McGee, James Stewart Jr, Phebe Stewart Workman, and Alexander Stewart.
