Services for Vernon P. Ward, 81, of Las Cruces, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Denton funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Bacon of First Baptist Church officiating.

Mr. Ward died Tuesday (May 18, 1993) at Wilbarger General Hospital in Vernon, Texas.

The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Carlsbad Cemetery.

Pallbearers include J.T. Stephens, George Carriker, Joe Magruder, V.L. Garner, Charles Wright and Pat Dyer.

Mr. Ward was born July 9, 1911, in Durant, Okla., and moved to Carlsbad in 1944. He married Sammie Durham March 18, 1941, in Atoka, Okla. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army based in Fort Sill, Okla.

He worked for the Potash Co. of America for 27 years before his retirement in 1976, moving to Las Cruces in September 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Sammie Ward of Las Cruces; two daughters, Sherry Ward and Deborah Ward of Las Cruces; one brother, Marshall Ray Ward of Poteau, Okla.; and three sisters, Elrena Wells, Pauline Kidd and Billie Jean Shreve, all of Durant, Okla.
