James was born in Ireland of Scotch-Irish descent. At the age of 4 he came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his parents, sister Jane and brother William. Aboard the ship "Tuscarora" they arrived Philadelphia the 17th of April, 1851. He grew up and was educated in Philadelphia.

James married Sarah about Sept., 1869 and at the age of 24 migrated to Saline County, Kansas with Sarah and brother William George to homestead.

In the winter of 1872/73, crossing the ice covered Smokey Hill River, James' horse broke through the ice. James died of pneumonia Feb. 26, 1873. He was survived by his brother William George, wife Sarah, who was pregnant at the time, and his young son William.

Wife Sarah took son William back to Philadelphia, PA to have her baby. Both Sarah and James' parents resided in Philadelphia. James' son William was raised by his paternal grandparents, John, whom William called Father Coburn and Jane.
