Mrs. John L. Davenport.
Bessie Ellen Weaklend, daughter of Stephen A. and Martha Haltom Weaklend, was born in Liberty township, Clarke county, Iowa, on March 28, 1890, and died a her home in Osage, Sask. Canada, September 6, 1916. Her girlhood was spent in Osceola except a few years in the old home in Liberty township.

She came with the family to Woodburn in March, 1908.

She was married to John L. Davenport September 26, 1911. To this union was born one son, Joe, who with his father is left to mourn her departure.

Her father died four years ago, but, as she was one of a large family of children there are still living besides her mother, one sister, five brothers, three half-sisters and four half - brothers; also there was a sister, Esther, who died of diphtheria September 26, 1893. At the same time Mrs. Davenport, then a child of four years, was stricken with diphtheria. She suffered severely with the disease and it left the weakness to continue through life, which culminated in Bright's disease and cut her off in the beauty of her young womanhood.

She united with the Christian Union church at Bethel Chapel in Liberty township at sixteen years of age and retained her membership there to the day her Master called her to come up higher. However, she was an active worker in the Church of Christ at Woodburn, having been a teacher in the Sunday school for four years. In spirit she was devotedly Christian and unselfish, thinking always of others, and in her home life was a kind and faithful wife and mother.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Christian church by the pastor Rev. North. He was assisted by Rev. A. F. Darrel of Oklahoma, former pastor at Bethel Chapel in Liberty township, under whose ministry Mrs. Davenport made her confession in Christ.
