Thomas Veltkamp passed away Aug 21, 1999, at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center, Bozeman, gallatin Co, MT.
He was born on July 17, 1923, at the family home in Manhattan, Gallatin Co, MT to Steve and Ann (Ungersma) Veltkamp.
He grew up and attended Manhattan Christian and graduated from Manhattan High School in 1941. His father died when he was 13. He helped support his mother and two sisters by hiring out in the summer time for various farmers. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served in World War II in the Marshall Islands. Following his discharge from the Marine Corp he enrolled at Montana State College, graduating in 1950. While at MSU he was a member of Alpha Zeta, Alpha Gamma Rho, played football from 1946-1947 and was a charter member of the Flying Bobcats.
Tom farmed and ranched in Three Forks, Manhattan and Menard before going to work at the Federal Land Bank in Bozeman as a loan officer. He worked at the bank for 20 years before retiring in 1987.
Tom was instrumental in bringing Little League Baseball to Amsterdam/Churchill; he was a member of the Gideon Bible Society, the American Legion, a charter member of the Gallatin Beef Producers and a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church, where he served as Cadet leader for eight years. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and listening to his grandchildren's stories.
Tom is survived by his wife Evelyn of Manhattan; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Geri Veltkamp Jr. of Denver, CO; daughter and son-in-law, Lilah Veltkamp and Charlie Baldwin of Vancouver, WA; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Cliff Tadema of Lynden, WA; son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Veltkamp of Castle Rock, WA; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Aileen Veltkamp of Manhattan; brother and sister-in-law Harold and Arlene Veltkamp of Belgrade; sister and brother-in-law, Margretha and Herman Broekema of Manhattan; sister and brother-in-law Stephanna and Donald Bos of Bellevue, WA; 15 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
