SOWELL
Funeral services for Mrs. Mellie Lou Sowell, 80, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Phillips and Luckey Chapel with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Rev. D.D. Simpson officiated. Mrs. Sowell died about 1:50 a.m. Friday in Richards Memorial Hospital after an illness of several weeks. She was a resident of a Thorndale Route and had lived in Milam County most of her life.
She was born August 27, 1895 in Williamson County to Mr. and Mrs. William H. George. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ebra Guthrie in 1938.
She and Elbert Sowell were married in 1944 in Angleton, Texas.
Survivors include her husband, Elbert Sowell of Rockdale; one daughter, Mrs. W.F. Scroggins of Thorndale; one grandson, Bobby Scroggins of Thorndale; two step-daughters, Mrs. Mary Jean McSpadden of Leander and Mrs. Bobby Nell Rymer of Grandberry; four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Wood of Stephenville, Mrs. Jennie May Radford of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Henrietta Kilpatrick of Killeen and Mrs. Thrasa Payne of Abilene; also two great-granddaughters, seven step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
Pall bearers were Pat Organ, Don Guthrie, Henry Wood, Frank Kilpatrick, Jr., H.H. Campbell and Halbert Campbell.

Although Mellie Lou George Sowell was on her second marriage at the time of her death, she had requested prior to her death that she be buried by her first husband, Ibra Guthrie, and that on her tombstone be put "Mellie Guthrie" instead of "Mellie Sowell".

Buried as "Mellie Lou Guthrie" beside her first husband, Ebra Guthrie.
