Christian August Grotjan was a native of Germany who was twelve years old when his parents settled in Chariton County. He became a prosperous farmer and was among the first men in the area to raise tobacco. August served with the state militia during the Civil War and was in service four years. He was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Church. In 1874 at age 37 he and his brother, Lewis H. Grotjan, became partners as general merchants and tobacco dealers and shippers in Dalton. The brother Charles, between them in age, did not enter the partnership. August died in 1877; he and his wife Mary Laker were parents of eight children, including twins Issac and Jacob.
