Mrs. Augusta Manson, one of the pioneer settlers of this county, died early Thursday morning, January 18, 1912, at the home of her son, C. A. Manson, six miles southeast of Brunswick. Her death followed an illness of five months, of kidney trouble and bronchitis.
Mrs. Manson before her marriage was Augusta Grotjan. She was born in Vlotho, a suburb of Pries Minden, Germany, and at the time of her death was 85 years and 1 month old. She received her early education in her native land and united with the Lutheran church there at age of 11 years. In 1841 she came with her parents to America, landing at New Orleans after a sailing voyage of nine weeks from Bremen. They sailed up the Mississippi river, landing about 10 miles west of St. Louis. There they made their home for five years, moving from there to this county, where our subject spent all the remainder of her long and useful life. She was married January 31, 1847, to Mr. Henry Manson, who preceded her to the grave 16 years ago. To this union ten children were born, two of whom died in infancy, four others, Henry, John, Lena and Caroline, died after reaching maturity, and four, C. A., F. W., Mrs. Douglas Hallowell and Mrs. William Neidholdt, all of this county, survive.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. F. G. Walther of this city at the home of C. August Manson, Saturday afternoon, January 20th, 1912, at two o'clock, followed by interment in the Manson family burying ground.
