Private Fielding FINNEY - Incorrect inscription on tombstone #1765 reads “F. FAERDLING CO. A 4 ALA. CAV. C.S.A.” He was taken prisoner at Paint Rock, Alabama in November 1864.

This soldier's Confederate Compiled Military Service Records is under the name of Fielding Finney. There is no F. Faerdling listed and the Camp Chase death record shows the name of Fielding Finney.

The 1850 United States listed Fielding (Spelled as Finny), age fifteen, born about 1835 in Alabama and living in the household of Permelia Finny, age fifty-one, born about 1799 in South Carolina with Jaret Finny age twenty and John Finny, age eighteen and Sarah (Spelled as Finney), age fourteen and the household was living in District 8, in Lawrence County, Alabama. (Sadly the compiler notes in previous experience with former Confederates who had enlisted in the Union Army within the 3rd Maryland Cavalry that at least one soldier had been reported as idiotic.)

The Alabama, Marriage Collection, 1800-1969 as found on Ancestry listed Fielding Finney married to Martha J. Gailey on January 12, 1859 in Lawrence County, Alabama.

The 1860 United States census listed Fielding Finney, age twenty-six, born about 1834, born in Alabama and mentioned as a farmer and as the head of household and living with his wife Martha J. Finney, age nineteen, born about 1841 in Alabama and their infant son Richard J. Finney, age two months and Permelia (Spelled as Finning), age sixty, born about 1800 in South Carolina and Sallie Finning, age twenty-two and also listed as idiotic, all living in the Northern Division of Lawrence County, Alabama with the nearest Post Office noted as Courtland. The compiler notes some genealogy records listed Permelia and John Finney as husband and wife and there was a John Finny, age sixty-four, born in South Carolina listed living in the next household of Permelia Finny in the 1850 United States census.

According to the American Civil War Database (A paysite) they reported Fielding Finney enlisting in Company A of the 4th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry on October 1, 1862 however no verification could be located.

Federal POW records reported Private Fielding Finney of Company A of the 4th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry as taken prisoner at Paint Rock, Alabama located in Jackson County, Alabama on November 8, 1864. The 4th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry was recruited in the northern counties in Alabama in which Lawrence County is located.

Federal POW records reported Fielding Finney transferred to Nashville, Tennessee and then forwarded to Louisville, Kentucky and finally transferred to Camp Chase where he arrived on January 11, 1865.

On March 27, 1865 President Lincoln visited with Generals Grant and Sherman at City Point, Virginia to discuss the last phases of the war and in Ohio, Camp Chase Prison Records reported the death of Private Fielding Finney on Monday March 27, 1865 at the Camp Chase Hospital due to pneumonia. On his hospital records his name was listed as Finney Sealing but spelling correction was noted. The compiler notes on his tombstone his surname was spelled as Faerdling.

According to the 1850 and 1860 United States slave schedules Fielding Finney owned no slaves.
