Converse was the first child of nine born to J. Elijah Chase and his second wife, Elizabeth Ann Sprague. He married Bessie M. Johnson; a daughter of Lewis Johnson and his wife, Julia Anderson. Bessie and Converse were wed in 1886 in Pocahontas County, Iowa. In 1897 Converse moved his wife and children to Otter Tail County, Minnesota. They had seven children, four sons and three daughters.

US CENSUS: Year: 1870 Pocahontas County, Iowa; Lizard Township: page 22 (62). Listed under Elijah Chase age 51 born in Connecticut and wife, Elizabeth age 34 born in New Brunswick, Canada.
