Bessie was the seventh child of Lewis/Louis Johnson and his wife, Julia Anderson. She married Converse S. Chase one of nine children born to J. Elijah Chase and his second wife, Elizabeth A. Spragg. Bessie and Converse were wed in 1886 in Pocahontas County, Iowa. They had seven known children; four sons and three daughters.
