Elijah was third child of Joseph Lapham Chase and Mary Converse. He married first to Charity Snell; a daughter of Nathaniel Snell and his wife, Julia B. Blaisdell. Elijah and Charity had two children. After Charity's death in 1855 (family letters indicate her death was due to complications during childbirth); Elijah married Elizabeth Ann Spragg; a daughter of William H. Spragg and his wife, Jane E. Burnett. Elijah and Elizabeth were wed on March 23, 1856 in Independence (Buchanan County), Iowa. They had nine children; six sons and three daughters.

US CENSUS: Year: 1870 Pocahontas County, Iowa; Lizard Township: page 22 (62). Individual: Elijah Chase age 51 born in Connecticut and wife, Elizabeth age 34 born in New Brunswick, Canada. Children listed are: Marquis 17 born in Canada, Converse 13 born in Iowa, Alfretta 11 born in Iowa, Tamson 10 born in Iowa, Frederick 6 born in Iowa, Francis 4 born in Iowa, Eunice 2 born in Iowa, and Joseph 1 born in Iowa.
