The oldest of the nine children was Bessie Bell and she married Lloyd Sausaman who was a mail clerk on the railroad. He got diphtheria and when he came home, Bessie got it and she died. Iva was with them at their home in Warsaw. They were quarantined and Iva had to stay there until the quarantine was over. They had a nurse from Chicago come and take care of Bessie and Lloyd. When the family went to see Bessie they could only look in the big window and not go in because of the quarantine. The funeral for Bessie was not held until Lloyd got better and was able to attend. Bessie is buried at the Eel River Cemetery.
