At some point in Hazel's life, she wrote the following:
Hazel (Coble) Shank was born July 22, 1905 to Samual and Emma (Hook) Coble. She was their eighth child, born on a farm south of Silver Lake in Kosciusko County. When Hazel was four, her family moved to a farm south of Sidney. She went to school at the Sidney school for four years, then to the new Haines School built south of Sidney, on State Road 13, finishing the eighty grade. She road on the school "hack" pulled by two horses and was driven by a woman part of the time.
