At some point in Hazel's life, she wrote the following:
Walter Ray was the third son born. His parents named him Walter Ray but always called him Ray since they didn't want him to be nicknamed Walt. He helped on the family farm and drive the school "hack" drawn by horses. He married Cloa Shaffer. They had seven children. Two died at birth, Jeanette and Dale.

Drove a horse-drawn school bus, a farmer, and worked at the Gripnut (later called Gripco Fastners) in South Whitley, Indiana.
First marriage, Cloa Fern Shaffer, Sept. 15, 1917. Divorced, Feb. 8, 1947.
