Mary Fairbanks, b. or bapt. Apr. 12, 1622 at Shelf near Halifax, Yorkshire, England, eldest dau. of Jonathan Fairbanks, Sr. and Grace Smith. She d. testate June 4, 1684 at Dedham, Mass.

On Apr. 2, 1644 at Dedham, Mass., Mary m. 1) Michael Metcalf, Jr., b. or bapt. Aug. 29, 1620 at Norwich, England, s. of Michael Metcalf, Sr. and Sarah Ellwyn. Five children were born of this marriage. Michael d. Mar. 25, 1654 at Dedham and Mary m. 2) Aug. 2, 1654 at Dedham, Mass., Christopher Smith, who. d. Nov. 7, 1676 at Dedham. There was one child of this second marriage. The children of these two marriages are/will be outlined in their respective father's memorial.

The Fairbanks Genealogy (1897) offers two dates of death for Mary (Fairbanks)(Metcalf) Smith: "10. 3. 1676 or 4: 4: 1684." The second date of death (June 4, 1684) is of Mary nee Fairbanks, being "Mary Smith, widdow" (DeVR, 20.) The earlier date (May 10, 1674) is for Mary, first wife of Asahel Smith of Dedham (DeVR, 15.) See Asahael Smith in the Dedham Historical Register, Vol. 8, April 1897, pp. 38-42 and July 1897, pp. 95-6.

The will of Mary (Fairbanks) (Metcalf) Smith of Dedham, relict of Christopher Smith dec'd, is dated May 30, 1684. The inventory of her estate was taken July 11, 1784. In the will she remembered son John Smith (by her 2nd husb.) and the children by her 1st husband: sons Jonathan and Eleazer Metcalf; daus. Melatiah (Metcalf) Metcalf, Sarah (Metcalf) Ware; two sons of her dec'd dau. Mary (Metcalf) Ware; dau.-in-law Hannah, wife of son Jonathan Metcalf, Jr.; and her brother John Fairbanks.
