Christopher Smith's origins are unknown. Savage in his Genealogical Dictionary badly mistates the identity of Christopher Smith of Dedham, Mass.

Christopher Smith first appears at Dedham, Mass. on Apr. 17, 1640 when the town granted him the right to purchase the former grant of 5 acres to "Jonas Humfrey, wth that litle pcell of Meedowe thervnto adioyneing, payeing vnto ye sayd Jonas such prportion of Charges as ye same will amount vnto." (DeTR, 67.) Christopher signed the Dedham Town Covenant, but the list of coventors is a continuous one without notation of when the individuals signed. It is likely that he signed by late 1639 or early 1640 in conjunction with the land purchase from Jonas Humfrey. As no wife or child is of record prior to his 1654 marriage to Mary (Fairbanks) Metcalf, in April 1640 Christopher must have been at least 21 years old, if not older. He joined the Dedham Church in Oct. 1642 and was admitted a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay on May 10, 1643.

Beginning in 1643 Christopher appears with regular frequency as an attendee at Dedham town meetings as well as in the town's tax rate schedules. He later purchased additional property at Dedham and also shared in various distributions of the town's common lands. On Aug. 30, 1651, the town took into consideration "ye men that ar exempted from ye Countrey Rate by ye polle. in regard of sicknes, lamenes &c.," they being "Mich(ael) Metcalfe seni, Jo(sep)h Kingsberey, Josh. Fisher seni, Sam: Morse, Rich(ard) Euered, Jonath(an) Fayerbank, Nath. Aldus, Lamb(ert) Genery: Joh. Eaton, Hen(ry) Chickeren, Jam(es) Jordan, Ed Hawes, Christo: Smyth, Henerey Brock." [DeTR, 182.)

On Aug. 2, 1654 at Dedham, Christopher Smith m. his only known wife, Mary Fairbanks, dau. of Jonathan Fairbanks and Grace Smith, and widow of Michael Metcalf, Jr. of Dedham. She was b. or bapt. Apr. 12, 1622 at Shelf near Halifax, Yorkshire, England and d. testate June 4, 1684 at Dedham, Mass.

Christopher Smith d. intestate Nov. 7, 1676 at Dedham, Mass. His widow Mary was appointed administratrix, with their son John Smith along with Daniel Fisher, all of Dedham, giving a bond for 410 pounds. The inventory of his estate dated Dec. 13, 1676 includes numerous farm animals, 19 acres of meadow, 5 acres of upland planting field, 1 lot in the great plain, 12 acres in the upland pond field, and 27 acres at what later became Natick, Mass.

Christopher Smith and Mary Fairbanks had only one known child, who was b. at Dedham, Mass.:

i. John Smith, b. Nov. 19, 1655, d. Oct. 7, 1722 at Needham, Mass.; m. Dec. 21, 1677 at Dedham, Abigail Day, dau. of Sgt. Ralph Day and his 2nd wife Abigail Crafts, b. Apr. 22, 1661 at Dedham. She d. June 15, 1725 at Needham, Mass. Ten children of the family, the first nine b. at Dedham and the youngest child at Needham.
