Enlisted as a musician in Company K, 58th Pennsylvania Militia, on July 11, 1863. The regiment was sent by rail from Pittsburg to help guard the upper fords of the Ohio River in an attempt to intercept Confederate Cavalry under General John H. Morgan. Following Morgan's surrender, the 58th guarded the prisoners until they were moved to the Ohio Penitentiary at Columbus. The regiment was discharged on August 14-15, 1863. His son, Alden S. Gulliford, served in the same company as a private.
