James Davidson fought in the Civil War on the side of the South. He volunteered at the beginning of the war in 1861, captured at Mayfield, PA and died as a prisoner in Union Camp Chase Prison, OH. The horrors endured by these prisoners were pitiful. They were poorly clothed and not used to the severe winters of the north and east. Feet and hands were frozen and many died of gangrene, as did James Davidson. He died at Union Camp Chase Prison Ohio.
In Virginia the Davidsons were Methodists and most of the descendants of James remained Methodists.
