James "Pop" Johnson


James "Pop" Johnson, 78, of Coatesville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at the Chester County Hospital.
Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Jesse and Amy Johnson.
He attended the Historical James Adams School.
James had been employed at Lukens Steel Co. for many years.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Coatesville and a member of the Lily of the Valley Lodge #59 F&AM.
He was a professional boxer in the lightweight division with a record of 22-1. He enjoyed training young people.
He is survived by his daughters, Yvonne A. Brown and Juanita Johnson, both of Philadelphia; his sons, James Johnson Jr., Kevin (wife Melanie) Johnson of Newburn, N.C., Michael A. Johnson of Philadelphia and Timothy K. (wife Mary) Johnson Sr. of Las Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 819 Coates St., Coatesville, with a viewing beginning at 9 a.m.
Interment will be in New Evergreen Cemetery in Coatesville.
Professional arrangements are being handled by Wright Funeral & Cremation Services of Coatesville.
