ELMER H. AREHART

HAYES -- Elmer "Shorty" Houston Arehart, 83, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011. A native of Staunton, he was born April 22, 1927, to the late Houston Linwood Arehart and Maggie Bell Michael Arehart.

Shorty was a member of Union Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7791 in Gloucester. He lived his life to the fullest and loved spending time traveling with his wife and friends, working at Busch Gardens after his first retirement, working in his garden and driving the church van for the Joy Club. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but we know he is in God's loving arms.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Christella Robbins Arehart; daughters, Pamela Carpenter and her husband, John, of Hayes and Robin Strong and her husband, Gordon, of Chesapeake; brother, Claude Hampton Arehart of Chesapeake; five grandchildren, Katie Strong of Atlanta, Ga., Clayton Strong of Chesapeake, Season Palas of Hayes, Austin Donner, DVM, of Mount Airy and Adam Carpenter of Hayes; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rodney Autry and Pastor Richard Whiteheart were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at Union Baptist Church in Achilles. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery.

The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hogg Funeral Home.

Family and friends gathered following the graveside service Tuesday in Union/Edwards Hall for fellowship and food.

In our loved one's memory, memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon Fire and Rescue, PO Box 9, Bena, VA 23018.
