Herbert Blake Cromwell Sr., 92, of Westport Island, died Sunday, June 24 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro.
Born on Westport Island May 14, 1909, he was the son of Charles L. and Lizzie Robinson Cromwell. He attended school on Westport and lived there all but four years when he and his family lived in Wiscasset.
Mr. Cromwell was self employed as a lobsterman for many years, worked at the A&P in Wiscasset a few years, then owned and operated a general store on Westport. He also was a machinist at Bath Iron Works.
He enjoyed bowling and playing cribbage. He was a member of Lincoln Lodge AF&AM in Wiscasset and the Westport Community Association, and a former member of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department, appointed as chief at one time. He also served as town meeting moderator, election warden, road commissioner and selectman.
On June 24, 1930 he married Frances Austin in Brookline, Mass.
He was predeceased by his wife Frances, son Charles L., and daughter Virginia C. Anderson.
Survivors include four sons, Calvin, Judson, and Francis, all of Westport, and Herbert Jr. of Wiscasset; one daughter, Marjorie C. Pooler of Wiscasset; 23 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; a sister, Clara C. Knight of Waldoboro; nieces; nephews and cousins.
At his request, there will be no funeral. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
