John Thomas Osgerby was the son of Thomas and Lucy (Grassam) Osgerby of Timberland, Lincolnshire, England, where John Thomas was born. After the death of his first wife and two young children in 1849, John traveled to the United States with his younger brother Jabez Osgerby and settled in Racine County, Wisconsin where Jabez married the widow Mary (North) Metheringham. Soon afterward John returned to England and married Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaunt daughter of Benjamin Gaunt and Elizabeth Marriot. Their marriage was registered in the first quarter of 1853 in the Spalding district of Lincolnshire.

Soon after their marriage John and Elizabeth emigrated to Milford, Oakland County, Michigan, where Elizabeth's sister Ann and her husband Samuel Garner had settled. John and Betsy's first child, John Joseph Osgerby, was born in Milford.

In 1854 John and Elizabeth moved to Richland Township, Delaware County, Iowa to homestead near John's brother Jabez and his family who had moved there from Kenosha County, Wisconsin. John and Elizabeth and their family remained in Richland Township until 1873 when they returned to Michigan to settle on a farm in Denmark Township, Tuscola County, Michigan.

John and Elizabeth had six children:

1) John Joseph Osgerby, (1854-1908), who married Lois "Belle" Slafter;
2) Miles Osgerby (1856-1943), who married Kezia "Kitty" Caldwell;
3) Giles Osgerby (1856-1934), who married Sarah R. Gordon;
4) William Osgerby (1858-1885), who never married;
5) Jabez Kaleb "J.K." Osgerby (1860-1942), whose first wife was Eliza "Lusettie" Hathaway and whose second wife was Reine May Torrey;
6) Elizabeth "Lizzie" Osgerby (1865-1899), who married John Manning.

All of the children except for John Joseph were born in Manchester, Richland Township, Delaware County, Iowa. Miles and Giles were twins. With the exception of Giles and Lizzie, all of the children are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Vassar. Giles is buried in Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove, Tuscola County, Michigan. Lizzie is buried in Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan.
