Family documents say Carl was born Sept. 10 or 20, 1865, while the tombstone says 1867. The church register at Little Elk Creek Lutheran church in Menomonie says he was born Sept. 27, 1865 and baptized Nov. 28, 1865. He was born in Dunn County, Wisconsin to recently arrived Norwegian parents Lars Olsen Scheie and Lisbeth Olsdatter Tingvand, both from Haegebostad, Vest Agder. As their family grew, they moved quite a bit in those early years, to South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. Carl took his own homestead near Naper, Boyd County, Nebraska (160 acres in the east half of section 22, Twp 35N, Range XVI West of the 6th P.M.) Carl married Minnie Blilie in 1892 and they had three children, Leo, Molly and Julia. Minnie died in childbirth in 1897. Carl took the children to live with his parents in Alton township, Brookings County, S.D. and he left for Alberta, Canada. Near Duhamel, Camrose County, he met and married a widow, Jurit Jensen (Judith, widow of Just), with children Oscar and Peter. She also had a son OK Johnson. They had one child, Harry, before Judith passed away in 1903. Carl then married Clara Wiberg, the daughter of a Swedish neighbour, Edvard Wiberg. Carl and Clara had twelve children of their own. In 1907 his three American children joined the clan.
As well as farming, Carl operated a store in Duhamel.
