Sarah was the daughter of Larkin C. Keown and Margaret Sallee. She was raised by her maternal great uncle and aunt Dr. and Mrs. Louis F. Shepard. Sarah's first marriage was to James Y. Topping. To this union were born eight children all of whom preceded her in death. Sarah was also married to JH Whitehead and Charles S. Jennings.
