A. H. was a justice of the peace at age 21, and studied trigonometry and surveying under Stafford Lapham of Hudson, NY. 16 Sep. 1822 he became a Captain, but resigned because of the increasing and excessive cost of keeping up the officer's table, etc. By 1822, he began teaching school at Corinth and Greenfield. 2 Dec. 1830, he bought 50 acres from his father. 6 Nov. 1832 he was inspector of schools. 8 Mar 1839 he bought a farm near his father and 5 of his children were born there. 25 Nov. 1858 he bought the Seymour Hill Farm. He was known as Squire Scott and was a lawyer and justice of the peace most of his life.
He and his wife were the parents of the famous Scott brothers of Scott Paper Company and their siblings:

Thomas Seymour Scott,
Clarence Wood Scott),
Myron Winfield Scott,
Cora Estelle Scott (Mrs. Herbert Waring) and
Amanda Maria Scott, who died young.
