Carl Gothfred Hammer, the oldest of
six children of Lars and Ellen Nystrom
Hammer, was born at the family farm
near Norway, December 2, 1899, and died
January 9, 1989 at his home in Scandia, at
the age of 89 years, one month and seven
days.
He graduated from Norway High School in 1918.
He served in the United States Army
for a short term during the final stage
of World War 1.
In 1921 he graduated from Grand
Island Business College and worked
briefly at a bank in Lexington, Nebr.
January 13, 1926, he was united in
marriage to Esther Johnson and to this
union five children were born. In 1930 he
purchased a grocery store which he operated
for 24 years. He became a director for Bachelor-
Faulkner-Dart Funeral Home,and worked for
the firm almost 30 years.
Preceding him in death were his
parents; two brothers, Lloyd and Iver; a
sister, Esther Lervold.
He is survived by his wife, Esther of the
home; three daughters, Joyce Hammer
of Belleville, Iona Tuley of Republic,
and Barbara Cox of Beloit; two sons,
William of Damariscotta, Maine, and
Pastor Hilton Hammer of Cedar, Minn.;
14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren;
two brothers, Harvey of Concordia, and
Harold of Scandia.
