JOSEPH M. LEESON DIES AFTER JUMPING FROM AN ENGINE
WALKED HOME, BUT INTERNAL INJURIES SOON RESULTED IN HIS DEATH.
BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL
HAD RESIDED IN GARRETT MANY YEARS BEFORE MOVING TO FORT SMITH, ARK.

The body of the late Joseph M. Leeson was brought to Garrett on No. 16 Friday morning and taken to the home of his father-in-law, H. A. Gard. at 212 High street. Funeral services were held there Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the Masons, the Revs. Davies, Tinkham and Grinnell officiating. Interment was male in Union cemetery.

The death of Mr. Leeson resulted from an accident and took place at the hospital at Fort Smith, Ark., last Wednesday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock.

He was an engineer on the Frisco lines and was on a fast freight when he saw a train standing ahead of his so close that he knew a collision was inevitable. It is said the crew of the train ahead did not put out a flag. Mr. Leeson and his fireman jumped from the engine. The fir-man was not hurt, and it was thought at first that the engineer was not seriously injured. The accident took place at a station fifty miles from Fort Smith.

Mr. Leeson went to Fort Smith on a train and walked home, a distance of several squares. He talked with his wife and got a drink of water. A physician who examined him did not find anything wrong, but within an hour or so he became deathly sick. He was taken to the hospital and expired three hours later from internal injuries.

Obituary
Joseph M. Leeson was born in Richland county, Ohio, near Shelby, March 17, 1863. Died at Fort Smith, Ark., February 26, 1918, aged 54 years, 11 months and 9 days,

He was the third child of Joseph and Eliza (Downend) Leeson. Two older brothers, James, died five years ago, and Ira, died eighteen years ago. One sister, Mrs. Hattie Imler of Garrett, and one brother, Edward of Altona, are living. The mother died about twenty-three years ago, and the father eleven years ago.

He came with his parents to Indiana when a small boy and at the time of the building of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad he carried water for the workmen. August 23, 1397, he was united in marriage to Ina M. Gard. To them was given one child, Dorcas B., who is now eighteen years of age.

When he grew to manhood he worked for the Baltimore & Ohio railroad for about fifteen years. Eleven years ago he moved to Danville, Ill., and remaining there but a short time he moved to Fort Smith, Ark., where he has since been an engineer on the Frisco railroad.

He was a member of the John W. Nelson division No. 445 B. of L. E. of that place, and M. H. Rodwig and wife and G. W. Eddy and daughter Reba, who are members of that division, accompanied the bereaved ones to the old home town. He was also a member of the Garrett city lodge No. 537 F. & A. M.

His death was brought about by a collision of two freight trains at Greenland, Ark., one train striking another and he was struck upon the head very slightly, as it was thought, and he finished his run and went to his home at Fort Smith. Then he gradually began to become affected and in a short time died.

The family greatly regrets the loss in transit of some beautiful floral offerings being sent to Garrett from Fort Smith.
