From the Legacy of the 90th Bombardment Group –‘The Jolly Rogers', by Wiley O Woods, Jr, page 116, photo credit William A. Rehart, info via Kenneth & Carolyn regarding B-24J #42-110051*, upon takeoff on a mission from the base at Nadzab, New Guinea 15 May 1944, "On the 15th of the month the Jolly Rogers with the 43rd and 22nd Bomb Groups were to hit Maffin Bay and Sawar areas. As 1st Lt. John H. Savarese, Jr., of the 320th Squadron was taking off, his number two engine caught on fire. Savarese was able to gain sufficient altitude to salvo his bombs, but the left wing dipped and caught the ground and the plane cartwheeled. With 3100 gallons of gasoline on board, the plane was immediately engulfed in flames upon impact. The Group continued takeoffs, but it was difficult for a pilot to take off over the burning wreckage of a friend's plane."
