Julia Maria Lee Beale (Beal) was born about 1818 in Virginia, probably in Alexandria, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Harper) Beale. Julia resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to moving to Texas with her parents. On Tuesday, January 8, 1839 Julia married Clement N. Bassett at Capt. Fergurson's farm in Harrisburg (later Harris) County, Texas. Clement Bassett was born about 1808 in New York, the son of Fortunatus and Sybil (Bacon) Bassett. Clement was an attorney and practiced law in Richmond, Texas. He died of cholera in 1849 in Houston.
Julia and Clement's marriage notice appeared in the "Telegraph and Texas Register" newspaper, published in Houston, Texas, Vol. 4, No. 29, Ed. 1, on Wednesday, January 16, 1839, and reads:
"MARRIED on Tuesday, 8th of January, at Capt. Fergurson's farm, Harrisburg county, by the Rev. John McCullough, [C.] N. BASSET, Esq., to Mist. JULIA MARIA LEE BEALE, late of Baltimore, Maryland."
In January 1854 Julia married her second husband Thomas Jefferson Smith in Fort Bend County, Texas. He was born in 1808 in Virginia, and died on February 16, 1890 in Fort Bend County, Texas. Julia died in May 1888 in Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas.
